This isn’t just about the iconic prancing horse logo and the undeniable allure of Ferrari. This 1954 625 F1 embodies the very essence of Ferrari’s purpose: conquering the pinnacle of motorsport.
Following their dominant victories in 1952 and 1953 with the legendary Alberto Ascari at the helm, Ferrari faced a new challenge. The FIA had switched Formula Two to the top tier of racing. To answer the call, they built upon the success of their championship-winning 500 F1, creating the 625.
This sleek machine housed a powerful 2.5-liter inline-four engine, pumping out 170 horsepower. Remarkably lightweight at just over 1,200 pounds, it was a force to be reckoned with.
The story behind this particular 625 adds another layer of intrigue. It began life as chassis number 0208F, a 500 raced extensively by Ecurie Francorchamps, the Belgian national team. Ferrari then upgraded it to the 625 spec in 1954, giving it a new chassis number (0540). After further racing, it was traded back to the factory.
This car’s journey continued with a hill climb in 1964 before finding a home in various private collections. After spending over two decades cherished by a single owner, it will take center stage at RM Sotheby’s upcoming auction in Monaco.
